a blender n' a banana

The title says it all. That's all you need in order to make fabulous and delicious ice cream!

Truthfully, I won't ever have another urge for traditional from-the-store ice cream. This is plenty sweet and flavorful enough. This one bowl lasted me three nights.

I have always wanted to make ice cream - like, literally always - but I never wanted to buy an i
ce cream maker. I might change my mind some day (perhaps in the near future...) but for now, this is beyond fine. In fact, it's perfect.

And bonus! This is an awesome way to use up bananas that are getting brown and going mushy. All you need to do is slice them up and stick them in baggies in your freezer, allow them to freeze completely and voila you are ready to make your ice cream!


Does that not look delicious? Mine was a bit melted because I am weird and I like to clean my dishes and stuff before I can enjoy my food/dessert. So this was what it looked like at the time of just having finished cleaning my making-ice-cream-mess : ) Anyway, make sure the bananas are truly frozen. It may seem strange, but trust me. And honestly, depending on how ripe the bananas you choose to use are, this doesn't taste too banana-y. It's pretty versatile. I've even added a bit of honey (which I know is somewhat controversial for some vegans, but not this vegan). You could add cocoa, coffee mix...peanut butter! Get creative, the possibilities are endless.

Here's another that I made tonight with frozen strawberries and peach slices that I've had for a while but haven't wanted to make smoothies or anything with for some unknown, annoying reason...

This one was super sweet and needed to be toned down a bit, so I added honey to taste and some drops of vanilla Stevita. Stevita (Stevia) can be hard to find; you can find granulated versions in some grocery stores, but it's just the sweetener (which you still could use). I bet some health food stores might carry the flavored liquid version since they're natural (no aspartame) and have no caloric value. I found mine on ebay. However, just plain old vanilla extract would do too ;) No need to get crazy - just use what ya got. That is essentially the meaning behind making this type of "ice cream", isn't it?
